What Is a Bicuspid Tooth? Meaning of the Name
A bicuspid tooth is so-named because it has two cusps, or points, on its surface. This is the technical term that not everyone knows. These teeth are commonly called premolars, and they are found in both the upper and lower jaws. There are eight bicuspid teeth in total: four in the upper jaw and four in the lower. Each quadrant of the mouth contains two bicuspid teeth.
Where Are Bicuspid Teeth Located?
The bicuspid teeth are located right between your canines and molars. It’s the same on the upper and lower jaw. The bicuspid teeth in the upper jaw are known as maxillary bicuspids, while those in the lower jaw are called mandibular bicuspids.
What Are Premolar Teeth For?
The bicuspid teeth have a few different functions. They are used for chewing and grinding food, and they also help to shape the mouth for speech. Additionally, bicuspid teeth play an important role in maintaining the alignment of the teeth. If you lost a bicuspid tooth, it would be difficult to bite and chew food properly, and your teeth might not line up correctly.
How Many Canals Do Bicuspid Teeth Have?
Bicuspid teeth have one to three canals, which contain the tooth’s pulp. The pulp is a soft tissue that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. The canals of bicuspid teeth are usually narrower and more curved than those of other types of teeth. This makes them more difficult to clean and more likely to develop cavities.
In 25% of people, there are two canals in the mandibular first bicuspid. The maxillary first bicuspid will have two canals in most cases, and second premolars will usually have one canal. It varies from person to person, so your dentist will be able to tell you how many canals are in your bicuspid teeth.
The number of canals is the same as the number of roots. Each root has a canal, and each bicuspid tooth has one to three roots. Only the minority of people have three canals in a premolar tooth. The number of roots can influence the cost of a root canal procedure if you need one.
Do Babies Have Bicuspids? Primary vs. Permanent Teeth
Babies have a set of 20 primary teeth, also called baby teeth or deciduous teeth. These teeth eventually fall out and are replaced by the permanent teeth. The bicuspid teeth are permanent teeth, and they typically erupt around the age of 9 to 13. By the time they are adults, people have 32 permanent teeth, including the bicuspids.
So, babies don’t have bicuspid teeth. They have molars right after their canines, and their bicuspid teeth don’t come in until they are older.
What Happens if I Have an Extra Bicuspid Tooth?
It’s not unusual to have an extra bicuspid tooth, also called a supernumerary tooth. These teeth can come in anywhere in the mouth, but they most commonly erupt in the premolar or bicuspid region.
If you have an extra bicuspid tooth, your dentist will probably just monitor it to make sure that it isn’t causing any problems. In some cases, the tooth may need to be removed if it is preventing other teeth from erupting or if it is causing crowding.
Do All Animals Have Bicuspid Teeth?
Bicuspid teeth are found in most mammals, but the number and location of these teeth varies from species to species. For example, humans – and the majority of placental mammals – have four premolars per jaw. On the other hand, marsupials (such as kangaroos and koalas) have two or three premolars per jaw. Here are some other facts related to animals and premolars:
- Rodents don’t have canines or bicuspid teeth. They only have incisors and molars, which are separated by a diastema (an empty space).
- Horses have 12 premolars, and they have 36 to 44 teeth in total.
- In carnivores, like cats, dogs, and bears, the bicuspid teeth are long and sharp. They’re called carnassials and used for slicing meat and crushing bones.
Isn’t that interesting? There’s so much variety among animals, and even within the mammal family. Not all animals have premolars, but for those that do, there are a lot of different ways that they can be used.
How Do You Say Bicuspid?
The word bicuspid comes from the Latin bicuspis, which means “two-pointed.” It’s pronounced bye-KUH-spid. There are also cuspids, pronounced KUH-spid, which is another word for canines. They have one cusp, which is why they’re called that.
